MedCo Rules Updated

MedCo has today published updated rules in relation to identification of claimants at examinations.

The new rule applies to Medical Reporting Organisations and Medical Experts and covers the identification checks that are required to be completed and the relevant supporting documentation.   The new rule is set out below:

Identification

Definition:

Photo-ID means a formal identity document showing a photograph of the claimant examples are passport, drivers licence etc.

For MROs:  (New Rule No:29)

A MRO must notify a claimant that they are required to bring Photo-ID to their medical examination, or where no Photo ID is available, another form of ID. The MRO must also require all IMEs appointed to carry out the medical examination to check the Photo-ID and/or other ID.  The IME must be required to confirm in the report that they have checked the photo ID/other ID, the nature of the photo ID/ other ID provided. Where no identification is checked or provided at the consultation, the reason for this must be recorded in the report.

For DMEs  (New Rule No:42)

A DME must notify a claimant that they are required to bring Photo-ID to the medical examination, or where no Photo ID is available, another form of ID, and check the Photo-ID/other ID.  The DME must confirm in the report that they have checked the Photo-ID/ other ID, the nature of the Photo-ID/ other ID provided. Where no identification is checked or provided at the consultation, the reason for this must be recorded in the report.
