Medical Expert Accreditation - Information on forthcoming changes - June 2019
Published: 4 March 2019
In June 2019 new annual Continuous Professional Development (CPD) requirement for all operational experts will become effective. Below is a summary of the changes, some of which you will see immediately, together with an outline of the changes that will come into effect.
What is changing?
Under the current system, medical experts have been required to complete an online training course consisting of approximately 30-40 hours to gain accreditation that is valid for a fixed three-year period. This three-year period is set to expire for many medical experts from March this year.
Following a review of the options the Education and Training Sub Committee have made a decision to introduce an annual CPD requirement to enable existing operational medical experts to maintain their accreditation.
Accreditation expiry – what do I need to do?
If your accreditation is due to expire before 1 June 2019, you do not need to do anything. Your existing accreditation will remain valid until the CPD is introduced. You will then be required to maintain your CPD each year, as outlined below. Further details about CPD will
To support the new CPD approach and to make it easier to access the training material, we have removed the need to log on to two different systems. There is now a single sign on. To access the training material, you will need to log on to your MedCo account at app.medco.co.uk and select the Training option that is now available on your home page.
The training site is being updated in preparation for the new elements of the accreditation process that will be introduced. You will notice that the design of the site has changed, and that all existing accreditation course material is available for your reference at any time. New content will be gradually loaded in the run up to the changes that come into effect. However, you will not be able to start any of the new training until CPD has gone live in June.
Changes effective from 1 June 2019:
From 1 June 2019, Medical Experts will have to maintain their accreditation via an annual CPD requirement. The CPD academic year will run from 1 June to 31 May each year. CPD will be made up of a variety of modules designed by the Education and Training Sub Committee. Some modules will be mandatory and some optional. All modules will count toward the annual CPD requirement. In May of each year the MedCo Board will stipulate the number of hours CPD training that will be required for the next CPD year.
Failure to complete the required CPD hours in any academic year will result in suspension for the expert which will only be lifted on completion of the CPD shortfall.
Failure to complete a CPD shortfall within 12 months will result in withdrawal from the MedCo system.
